Give Peeps A Chance!

We’re Sam Jones and Emily Katt. Our families would like to raise a few hens as pets and for fresh organic eggs, but Johnson City’s code enforcement criminalizes it with a "secret policy". We are making efforts to coordinate progressive change in Johnson City, advocating not only for backyard pet hens, but for local foods and urban self-sufficiency.

Why Pet Hens?

  • Hens ~no roosters!~ are quieter than dogs or parrots and when well-cared-for as suburban pets (not as farm animals) they don't smell.
  • Fresh homegrown eggs are healthier for you, the hens, and the environment: no industrial hens pumping out your family's eggs in crowded conditions (think: 6 inches square space total per hen), no fuel used trucking them to stores.
  • Backyard chickens lead happy, healthy lives. Predators can't attack them and, kept in attractive garden coops, they won't roam into neighbors' yards (like some dogs and cats do...)
  • Composted droppings make incredible garden fertilizer. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
  • Cities all over America allow and even encourage backyard hens for their responsible, self-reliant citizens. Hens are fun, educational, and make good neighbors.

Here's one bad chicken joke to tide you over...

Q: What do you get if a chicken lays an egg on top of a barn?
A: An eggroll!
